Major Problems at Island Brewery
The Arran brewery has gone bust just shortly after apprently hitting the big time and getting into a number of supermarkets.
They've been hit by rising fuel and malt prices and the high cost of getting materials onto the island and finished product off again.
Where have we heard that before? If only they'd been reading the Colonsay Brewery Blog they would have seen it coming.

Joking aside its sad to see a fellow Scottish brewer go bust - especially one on an island like us. Hopefully they will find a buyer and get back into production not least for the 11 people that work there. They had already done us a bit of good. When they went into Tesco the Kitchen Graden in Oban stopped stocking them as they were no longer unusual and interesting hand crafted beer but a volume product. Step forward an interesting and hand crafter beer - yes we got their shelf space.

One in the Pie for Us
A guy from the Sunnyside Veal farm at Sanquar came up to us at the market wanting to buy some beer. Apparently unknown to us they have been putting it into their veal pies and selling them as Colonsay Ale Veal Pies.
Guess what. He didn't have any left but one day we'll find out what they taste like. But it is a bit random isn't it as he didn't seem to know much about the brewery and our beers, except they went well with his veal.

Market Report
The market was about the same as usual today, less 80/- being sold and more lager and IPA reflecting the warmer weather.
Should we keep going on it. Well lets throw it into the melting pot at the next board (bored) meeting next week.

Market no More?
Stocks are already under pressure and the summer has not really started. There is a bit of a debate going as to wether to keep going with the Glasgow Farmers Market. There are considerable costs in selling the beer there - stall, licence, travel etc - and iof there is not enough to go round it should be the first to go. Its on Saturday so we'll see how we get on and make a decision after that. Needless to say the skiver is keen to give it up - its the only thing he does.

The Best Customers in the World
We made a delivery of 80/- and Lager to the Cuan Mor and heard the best tale yet. One table of punters came in to the bar last night and thought they would try the 80/- ale. By the time they left that had consumed 50 pints between them. Sadly estimates of how many this was shared between vary and so there is little point in reporting them here. Well done guys - you are welcome on Colonsay at any time.
It should be said both beers are now running beautifully in the Cuan and the lager is outselling their previous favourite Tennents by a considerable margin. I imnagine its only a matter of time before Tennents go bust.
