Storm Stops Brewing

Today was going to be the historic third brew - IPA - ingredients meticulously prepared, malt ready to be milled Calmac cancel the Monday boat, island deprived of fresh food and newspapers - Colonsay Brewery deprived of consultant brewer George - better known as SUPER GEORGE - the man who can.

George designed and built our brewery and is honing the skills of brewers Bob and Chris. Bob was going to be flying solo today, his fellow brewer still soaking up the sun at the cricket world cup.

But it was not to be. The weather stepped in and George stepped on the gas home again saying: "I will be back", on Wednesday.

Chris is apparently on a bit of a low profile today having sparked a bit of trouble in St Kitts by encouraging a passing drunk to go for a spin in the early hours in a pedallo.

Just think on days like this shortly, when product is available, storm bound time can be given over to quality control - all day long.

Its Friday and it can't be long before we get a TGIF Pint

Well we had to buy the boxes in bulk to cut the frieght charges and get a decent unit price (as they say in big business) The trouble is now we need a bigger brewery.

Freight is going to be the big issue here. Everything brought in from the mainland, except water funilly enough, and then taken off again is its not drunk here. We knew the challenges before we started though so its all built in to the carefully constructed business model(more business chat again). However if you find a party promising to scrapo island freight charges after our May 3 Scottish Parliament elections.....vote for them.

We are brewing. The lager was first off and is bubbling away nicely. It will be ready for Easter and smells, tastes and looks good.

The 80/- smells fantastic amnd will also be ready for Easter.

Even better news -the discerning management of the award winning Colonsay, our local hotel and restaurant, have signed up to be one of our customers and I would hope, suspect, no, know that by this time next year they will only be selling our beers and lager. Here's hoping anyway.

As darkness falls over the island what would be better than the four of us shutting the door and having a laugh over a pint or two, quality control you know, but its not to be.

The beer is not ready, Mr Nisbet just happens to be at a cricket world cup, and the skiver is skiving. Not long now though.

Welcome to the Colonsay Brewery Blog!
Colonsay Brewery is a micro brewery based at the heart of our small Scottish community on the Atlantic Island from which we take our name.

It’s not easy making beers and lagers in such a remote location but we believe the unique environment of the island and our seaside location combine to allow us to make products of an exceptional quality.

The pace of life here on Colonsay is that of a bygone age in mainland terms with the weeks punctuated with the coming and going of the lifeline ferry service provided by Calmac three times a week in winter and more often in the summer.
